The History and Art Museum-Reserve in Sergiev Posad is a major treasury of
Russian art. The main peculiarity of the Museum is its location within the walls
of the ancient Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery. Nowadays the monastery carries the
name of Lavra that translating from Greece means "main and most important
monastery". There are four lavras in Russia, but the Trinity Lavra of St.Sergey
(full name) is considered to be "Russian Vatican" and besides our patriarch's
temporary residence is situated there. The world-famous architectural ensemble
was founded in the first half of the 1340s by the son of Rostov Boyar Sergius of
Radonezh which later became one of the richest Russian monasteries. The
Monastery includes more than fifty edifices constructed by Moscow, Pskov,
Yaroslavl craftsmen. it is an inseparable part of the Museum complex. In 1993 it
was inscribed on the UNESCO List of the World Cultural Heritage.
